Oakwood School High School Math and Science Teacher &
Oakwood Parent and Alumni Parent, Class of 2023, 2025, 2028 and 2031
I joined the Oakwood School staff in August 2015. I teach next door to my husband, Dr. Sean Wilmot, who is the Science Department Chair. During my time here, I’ve had the privilege of teaching students from grades 1 through 12, although my current focus is on grades 8 through 12. The school campus, with its natural beauty, never ceases to inspire me, and I deeply appreciate the autonomy I have when it comes to designing and delivering my classes.
As a parent, my connection to Oakwood goes beyond the classroom. I’m fortunate to have three children – Rohan, Sean, and Tara – who are currently students at Oakwood. My eldest, Ayana, graduated in the spring of 2023 and is now a freshman at UCLA. It has been a source of immense pride for me to watch Ayana excel in both the Vocal Ensemble and as the Captain of the Varsity soccer team during her time at Oakwood.
In my role as an educator, I’ve had the opportunity to create several engaging elective courses. These range from Animation & Game Design in JavaScript and an Introduction to Virtual Reality for middle school students, to more advanced offerings such as Web Design & Development and Cyber Security for high school students. In the spring of 2016, I successfully secured a grant for the school to purchase LEGO Mindstorms EV3 kits, which I utilized in various Robotics classes and projects. Notably, one of our First Lego League teams advanced to the Regional Championships in December 2019, a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students.
In the current academic year, I’m teaching four different computer science classes with a total of 61 students. I’m particularly thrilled to share that over 50% of these students identify as female, reflecting our commitment to promoting diversity in STEM fields. Oakwood’s achievements in this regard are exemplified by the 2021 Female Diversity Award for AP Computer Science Principles, and this year we’re also set to receive the Award for AP Computer Science A. It brings me immense joy to have taught some of my high school students since their middle school and elementary school days, witnessing their growth and development over the years.
I look forward to continuing my journey at Oakwood School, fostering a love for learning and innovation among my students, and celebrating their achievements, both in and out of the classroom.
